Cooking With Etsy Dallas: Decadent Turtle Brownies

Here's a recipe I wanted to share with all of you with a sweet tooth! I used to make these for family gatherings a few years ago but I get requests for them to date!

Ingredients:

Brownies:
-3 ounces of unsweetened chocolate-chopped
-12 tablespoons or 1 1/2 sticks of unsalted butter, cut into pieces
-3 large eggs
-1/2 cup brown sugar
-1 cup granulated white sugar
-1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
-1/2 cup and 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
-1/4 teaspoon salt

Caramel Topping:
-40 Kraft caramels (10 ounces) unwrapped
-1/2 cup of heavy whipping cream
-2 cups toasted pecan halves

Ganache Topping:
-2 ounces of semisweet chocolate, coarsely chopped
-1/4 cup heavy whipping cream

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (177 degrees C) and place rack in the center of the oven. Butter, or spray with a non stick vegetable spray, a 9 x 13 inch (23 x 33 cm) rectangular baking pan.

For the brownies: melt the chopped chocolate and butter in a stainless steel bowl placed over a saucepan of simmering water. Remove from heat and set aside while you make the brownie batter. Meanwhile, beat the eggs and sugars with an electric or hand mixer until smooth. Beat in the vanilla extract and then the melted chocolate mixture. Beat in the flour and salt on low. Then pour the mixture into the prepared pan and bake for about 20 minutes.

For the caramel: put the unwrapped caramels and cream in a saucepan and melt, over low heat (stirring frequently), until smooth. Remove from heat and stir in the toasted pecans, making sure all the pecans are coated with caramel. Spread the caramel topping evenly over the still warm brownies and let cool to room temperature. Then cover and refrigerate brownies for about an hour or until the brownies are firm.

For the chocolate ganache: put the chopped chocolate in a heatproof bowl. Heat the cream in a small saucepan over medium heat (or in the microwave). Bring just to a boil. Immediately pour the boiling cream over the chocolate and allow to stand for 5 minutes. Stir until smooth.

Remove the brownies from the refrigerator and, using a fork, drizzle the Ganache over the brownies in a zigzag pattern. Cover and refrigerate until the chocolate is set.

Store, covered, in the refrigerator for 7 to 10 days, or in the freezer for longer storage. Makes about 48 brownies.

My turtle brownies turned out like this:

May Category Spotlight: Clothing

Growing up, I watched my mother make beautiful clothing. Tell her what you wanted and voila! She would whip it up. When my children were born I thought I would make cool, funky clothes for them. I bought some great fabric and set out to make a pair of pajama pants for my daughter. It wasn't pretty. It is very hard to put on a pair of pants when the waistband has been sewn shut. I have since decided to leave all things clothing to the experts. And believe me, there are plenty of experts on the Etsy Dallas team!

As a stay-at-home mom / theater teacher, my wardrobe is what can best be described as casual and comfortable. Thank goodness for the team's three "Clothing" crafters: Megan of Harrilu, Summer of Signifying Not Designs, and Dylan of Dowdy Studio. These guys make my dream of living in t-shirts and hoodies possible!

Since I hadn't clued any of these three in on my wardrobe dreams, I couldn't help but wonder: Why t-shirts?

Summer of Signifying Not said she started making t-shirts because she wanted to take the idea of fine art and make something usable with it. "I wanted to make art that could be lived in." Gotta love that!

Dylan Dowdy began screen-printing in late 2007 as something fun and art-related to do at home. The graphic artist spends time in his studio drawing and hand printing tees with the tunes turned up really loud, coffee flowing and loads of fun. "I enjoy the creative freedom I give to myself to do whatever I want each day. Nothing can beat that."

So, it looks like whatever the occasion, Etsy Dallas has your back - well that and your front, part of your arms - covered! (Had you left the job to me I can't gurrantee that would have been the case.)

For example, we have a lot of baby, kids and maternity clothing crafters who were spotlighted in March, and our own Tara to the T makes fabulous feather and steampunk accessories in addition to clothing. Every member will be spotlighted throughout the year in their primary category. Enjoy our spotlights and stay tuned to all the great things our members are making and designing!

Make It: Homemade Baby Food

[reposted from Stephanie's personal blog, Life With Ian]

Today I rushed home with Ian and got right down to the business of making peas. It was just about as easy as popping open a jar of Gerber. Here's how I did it:

1. Buy fresh or frozen peas.

2. Steam the little suckers for about 10 minutes on a low boil.

3. Puree with a cup or so of distilled water. You can also use the pea water from the pan; it's loaded with vitamins!

4. Work the puree through a sieve, if you please. This is optional and, honestly, not worth the time.

5. Feed fresh to baby.

6. Then freeze the rest. This bag made enough for two trays full - that's about 18 jars of the factory stuff, and it took less than 20 minutes. Easy peasy!

Spotted at the Bash: Bradley Whitford

Holy Toledo, Batman! Several vendors - Silla Soup, Hip Hazel Hoops, and Wrap Couture - got a glimpse (and even talked with) super actor, Bradley Whitford at Saturday's insanely fun Spring Bash - our 7th show to date.

Best known for his roles in The West Wing and Studio 60 (and lesser known role of a smarmy Fed in A Perfect World), Whitford is in Dallas filming his upcoming TV show The Good Guys. The [ahem] good-lookin' actor took time out of his busy filming schedule to stop by the Bash in support local artists. Incredible! We are truly humbled and star-struck with his visit.

Hey Bradley - did you buy anything? Email us! We are dying to know...

More about The Good Guys (from Wikipedia):
The series is being filmed primarily in Dallas, Texas and is making use of the Fair Park area as much as possible for its diverse shooting locations and so as not to disturb the residents. The show was originally planned to be set in Los Angeles until Dallas city officials convinced creator Matt Nix to set the show in Dallas. Nix said of Dallas, "It’s a great city to jump on the hood of a car." Production work on the series began in January 2010 and principal photography of the pilot wrapped in early February 2010. Cast members spent time shadowing their real-life Dallas counterparts to prepare for their roles.

Spring Bash: It's All In the Details

We hope you are excited as we are about the upcoming Spring Bash this Saturday. It will be our 7th craft show since our humble beginnings in 2007! There is so much fun stuff to do at the Bash - shop, craft, drink, groove - that we sometimes forget the boring stuff. Here's the low down on some important details:

RAIN OR SHINE!
Since the Spring Bash is all indoors at South Side on Lamar, no rain or yucky weather will stop us from having this party. Come one! Come all!! (and bring plenty of cash...see below)

PARKING
Shoppers can park in several places at South Side on Lamar. There is a free 2-hour retail lot across from the main Bash entrance on Belleview Street, several larger $5 lots next to this small 2-hour lot, meter spaces along Lamar Street, and some free parking sprinkled throughout The Cedars neighborhood.

DART RAIL
Take the blue or red line to The Cedars stop on the DART rail, and save on gas and ugly carbon emissions!

BIKE ON OVER
We love our bike friendly citizens. Strap on your helmet and head over to South Side on two wheels!
MONEY STUFF
There are two ATM's on site, but the Bash cannot control if they are functioning and/or full of dollars. Please bring plenty of cash with you since many vendors cannot accept credit cards (that costs the artists money!). Our DJ also accepts cash tips. Believe us - you're gonna love him and he's worth a few dollars to say "Thanks for the groovin' tunes!" Absinthe Bar will accept cash or credit for drinks.

DOGS LOVE CRAFTS
It's true! Dogs just love the handmade way. Show them a good time by bringing your leashed pal to the show. South Side is a dog-friendly building, and the Bash is a dog-friendly event!

Spring Bash Daily Discovery: For the Men

Hey guys! This is for you. We know most art + craft shows don't offer you the chance to get some real man shopping done. Instead of being dragged through miles of cutesy hair clips, frilly dresses, enormous purses and shiny jewelry, you can have your "Man Moment" at these artist's booths at the Spring Bash. They offer some unique guy items that just might compete in a manliness competition with chest hair and beards.

Ditch the ladies, grab a beer at our bar, and get your well-deserved man time in.
