Artist Spotlight: Ahaus Pottery

We’re so excited to shine a little light on one of our Dallas M.A.D.E. leadership friends, Karen Ahaus, the incredibly talented and kind-hearted artist behind Ahaus Pottery. A true creative spirit and beautiful soul, she’s been shaping, crafting, and inspiring through clay for many years.

With years of experience and a deep love for the handmade process, she’s not only built a thriving pottery business but also continues to pour her heart into our creative community, sharing her knowledge, and reminding us all why we do what we love.

What inspired you to start Ahaus Pottery, and how has your style evolved over the years?

I began Ahaus Pottery in 2011 after moving to Texas and finally having my own home studio. When I was taking ceramics classes, I always had to use the glaze colors that were used in that specific studio. When I began my own home studio, I dabbled in the colors that I like - blues, greens, pastels, etc., instead of brown and dark colors. I began with your normal pottery: bowls, mugs, and trays. Over time, I have created my own modern nativity, various ornaments, and cell phone holders that also hold your glasses.

Can you share a little about your creative process from inspiration to finished piece?

I am inspired by nature and being outside. I love textures on trays, carved flowers on colanders, and tassels on earrings. The clay process is a slow one with multiple steps that can go wrong. Only through meticulous record keeping, testing, and experimenting can I create a beautiful final product. The beginning to the end of a pot takes about 4-6 weeks. So, when you buy one of my pieces of art, you are buying a piece of me, my experience, and my time.

What’s your favorite part about working with clay?

Clay is magical! You can form it, bend it, and glaze it in a myriad of ways! I prefer to make useful and practical things, both on the potter's wheel and hand-built, with a few decorative items mixed in. My pieces are fired in the kiln twice - once to 1900 degrees and a second time to 2220 degrees. It is like Christmas morning when I open the kiln and everything has come out as planned. Sometimes, things happen, like a glaze runs off the piece or something suddenly shows a crack. When you see my work at Jingle Bash, you are seeing the very best!

Do you have a favorite piece you’ve ever created (or one that was hardest to part with)?

My favorite piece is one that I still have because I cannot part with it. It is a vase that looks like three trees. Carved into the sides of each tree are "breathe", "reach out", and "let it go". Inside is stamped the word "foundation". The vase is a testament to my faith in God, which is my foundation. The trees stand for the Trinity.

How do you hope people feel when they take home one of your handmade pieces?

I hope they use the piece over and over again. I want them to feel joy each time they see it and use it.

What’s something people might not realize about the craft of pottery?

Most people have no idea the hours and years of practice it takes to be very good at the craft. They don't realize how many steps are involved and the amount of equipment needed: pottery wheel, kiln, glazes, clay storage, etc. People especially don't understand that I cannot just make any color they want me to match. Glazes are created with rocks and minerals that are dug from the ground, often from other countries. A difference of just 1/100th of a gram in an ingredient of a glaze recipe can produce a totally different color.

As an artist, it’s easy to have favorites, whether that is color, medium, etc What would you say is yours?

I actually like making handles on things, which a lot of potters despise. A great handmade handle has a great feeling in your hand. I also use all of the colors that I like: turquoise, green, pink, mint, cranberry, white, and more.

What advice would you give to other makers or new vendors just starting?

Keep trying new items and see what people gravitate to. Each show is different. Some items sell well at one show and get no traction at another. Keep good records so you can reflect later.

You’ve been part of Jingle Bash since the early days. what first drew you to join the community?

I was drawn to this community so I could learn from other makers, not just other potters. Every maker has a unique area of expertise. This community supports one another in making your small business work and thrive.

Artist Spotlight: Odin Leather Goods

You’re in for a treat because you’re about to fall in love with the craftsmanship behind Odin Leather Goods. This family-run company right here in the DFW area isn’t just making leather goods; they’re shaping stories you can carry with you every day. From belts to quality bags, every piece has a lasting charm mixed in with a little bit of Texas grit.

What started as a passion project has grown into a full-fledged legacy of craftsmanship, community, and trust. Once you get a glimpse behind the stitching, you’ll see why Odin Leather Goods has fans far beyond Texas.

First, where can we find you and your amazing leather products?

We don’t do many markets or shows these days since we stay so busy, except for a few favorite events like Jingle Bash. Most people can find us online or at one of our two physical stores. Our larger location in Old Town Coppell, which also houses our manufacturing studio, where we make everything. At this store, you’ll find everything we make, along with custom, exotic, and one-off pieces that never make it to the website. We’ve been here for four years now.

Our original store at Grandscape has been around for six years. It’s a bit smaller but carries plenty of our smaller items that are perfect for gifting.

Since you’ve been doing this for quite some time, would you say your creative process or style has changed over time?

Absolutely! We’ve grown a lot over the last 12 years. Our work is more consistent from one item to the next, and we’ve really locked into small-batch production. We’re always searching for the best leathers available at the right price point. Our designs continue to be refined, streamlined, and perfected.

How do you hope people feel when receiving one of your products?

We want customers to feel a sense of joy and pride knowing they’re buying solid, high-quality goods made right here in Texas. Not just in America, but in DFW! When they make a purchase, they’re supporting a family-owned business and the families that work with us.

We want them to be thrilled the day they get it, but even more thrilled years later when they realize how well their money was spent. The quality and durability of OLG products should stand out both today and after years of use.

What’s something people might not realize about what you make?

Surprisingly, a lot of people don’t realize that we actually make all our leather goods ourselves! We’re not ordering from overseas and stamping our logo on it. We make it right here, and anyone is welcome to stop by and see it in action.

We order hides from tanneries around the country and the world, then cut, assemble, and sew everything ourselves. Every design is unique to OLG and the result of my imagination and collaboration with the team.

What’s been the most rewarding moment since starting your creative journey?

We love hearing from customers! It’s really heartwarming when someone comes up and tells us they bought an item at a Jingle Bash or another event six, seven, or even nine years ago. They’ll proudly show how much the leather has aged or broken in, and most say they love their item more now than the day they bought it.

Many of our customers have followed our journey as we’ve grown. They’ve seen our product lines evolve and even watched my kids grow up. They talk about us so warmly and personally. For me, the most rewarding part has been not just building a respected leather brand but also creating lasting memories and connections with our customers.

What’s the best part of working with leather goods?

The best part has been building a brand and business with family and friends. After years in digital marketing, it’s incredibly satisfying to create something tangible using real products that have to hold up to everyday use. And we’re doing just that!

Leather is a universal material. Everyone has a story connected to a leather item, whether it’s a bag, a baseball glove, a belt, or something that holds meaning. It’s the smell, the look, the feel. Leather keeps memories. It’s a wonderful and rewarding material to work with every day.

Do you have any new pieces or surprises debuting at the market?

Everything has been refreshed and revamped! If you haven’t seen us at and market recently, or stopped by the store, I think you’ll be surprised. 

What’s the “must-have” or perfect gift from your collection this season?

Our Larissa Zip-Top Tote has been a huge hit. It’s a new design we released just a few weeks ago, and it’s been hard to keep in stock. We should have a few available at Jingle Bash!

What do you love most about being part of this local market and creative community?

I’ve been fortunate to travel across the country with Odin Leather Goods to teach and share, and I truly believe no other area has such a rich community of makers who are both talented and supportive. Most people here genuinely want to help fellow makers and small business owners succeed.

The only thing they love more than talking about their own products and brand is bragging on their favorite local brands, and that’s awesome! There’s so much that customers can discover right here in North Texas. They can find the most unique and inspiring products while supporting small businesses in their own backyard.

Artist Spotlight: Sasha’s Hand Poured/The Immaculate Beard

This week’s Vendor Spotlight is on The Immaculate Beard, a Dallas-based brand that takes men’s grooming to the next level! Every product is handcrafted in small batches with care, using quality ingredients that keep beards looking (and smelling) their best. We love supporting local makers who pour passion into every detail, and The Immaculate Beard does just that.

What inspired you to start creating beard care products?

I saw a need!  I had bearded family members and friends, and when I began creating this line, there weren’t many products on the market.  I wanted something that women would feel good about gifting to the men in their lives, since that was my main customer demographic at the time.  So I got in my kitchen and began to experiment, and just started passing out samples to everyone I knew for feedback.  Surprisingly, the feedback was really great early on, and it didn’t require many more rounds of experimenting! I began with 2 scents of beard oil and 2 scents of balm, and just expanded from there.  We have about 12 scents now, and it is a full line of men’s beard, shave, and personal care. 

Can you tell us how you came up with your brand name and what it represents?

I hired an amazing one-person branding and design firm, and we knew what we wanted to get across - which was to somehow reconcile the fact that this men's care brand was created by someone without a beard.  The Immaculate Beard is about more than just looking good; it’s about taking pride in the details. “Immaculate” captures that sense of care, craftsmanship, and confidence that comes from a well-kept beard. It’s a nod to an old-school apothecary but with a modern twist. 

What would you say makes your beard oils or balms stand out from others on the market?

I choose ingredients carefully so that our products will be sustainable for the long term without causing damage to the environment.  No extra rare ingredients, no fillers, no parabens or phthalates, no claims to grow your beard overnight.  Just quality ingredients packed into a small tin or bottle. Everything is still made in small batches by hand in our shop in the Design District of Dallas. We keep batch records so we know every ingredient, where it came from, and what date each batch was created and packaged.  

Can you tell us about some of your key ingredients and why you chose them?

We use a blend of natural botanical oils like jojoba, argan, and MCT.  These are lightweight, easy to absorb, and feel great on the beard and skin. The beeswax helps with holding and shaping.  Our essential oils are carefully balanced for scent and function, and we never use anything we wouldn’t feel good about using ourselves. Our fragrances are phthalate-free and skin safe. We choose to use a very small percentage so that it isn’t overwhelmingly scented on the face.  

What’s your best-selling product, and what do customers love most about it?

Dark Beard Oil is hands down the favorite for almost 10 years now. It’s got this deep, smooth scent with notes of tobacco blossom, caramel, honey, and rose. It’s a little warm, a little spicy, and a little sweet.  We actually use that scent in both of our lines - Sasha’s Hand Poured and The Immaculate Beard.  People love how different it is from anything else they have found.  

Do you have any gift ideas for people shopping at Jingle Bash?

I will have beard grooming gift sets, which contain all the products needed to turn a beard from drab to immaculate!  I also plan to have smaller-sized items so people can gift the immaculate beard to as many people in their lives as they would like to!  

What’s your personal favorite scent or product from your line, and why?

This one is hard!!!  I find myself using the lotions and lip balms more than anything else.  I LOVE to wear a lightly scented lotion or perfume that isn’t overbearing but that people comment on when they get close!  Scent to me is so personal, and I always find myself coming back to prickly pear lotion!  It’s just this perfect blend of sweet, fruity, but also a little grown-up! 

What can shoppers expect when they visit your booth at the Jingle Bash?

I love meeting new people and sharing my love of all things bath, body, and beard!  I will have samples to share, lots of choices, and I will be happy to help you find the right product!  I want to help people look good, smell good, and feel good when they leave my booth!

There will be a lot of holiday shopping. Do you have any great stocking stuffers? 

Most of my items are smallish, very reasonably priced, and great for gifting!  

What do you love most about being part of this local market and creative community?

Dallas has an amazing handcrafted community that I am proud to be a part of for more than a decade!  I personally know and work with a lot of the artists at the Bash and feel that it is a complete privilege to be a part of this community!  Events like the Jingle Bash showcase the incredible talent swirling around our town, and I love it!  I have to bring a helper to the Bash because I want to shop it  (when I am supposed to be working it!). I’m looking so forward to seeing every one of you!

This year, not only do we have great vendors, but we also have a mobile coffee bar INSIDE, to keep the holiday energy flowing! The brand behind the bar is none other than Beeso Coffee, a local favorite known for its bold brews and community spirit. First, please tell us - where can we find you?
You can visit us at our cozy café inside Firewheel Mall in Garland, TX, or at our spot inside Green Vine Market in Plano. And if you’ve seen a sleek espresso cart at an event around DFW, there’s a good chance it was us! We love bringing the Beeso experience to weddings, pop-ups, birthdays, and corporate events across DFW.

What inspired you to start Beeso Coffee, and how did the name come about?
Beeso Coffee started from a simple love for coffee and the moments it creates. We’ve always seen coffee as more than just a drink; it’s a connection, a shared experience, and often the best part of someone’s day. The name Beeso actually comes from the owner’s nickname, which his kids still love to use, making it the perfect fit for a family-run business built on warmth, care, and heart.

Can you describe your coffee roasting style or flavor philosophy?
We’re all about high-quality, specialty coffee that tastes as good as it smells. We source premium beans from small harvest farms and roast them to a smooth, medium profile, the perfect balance of flavor and consistency. We also use top-tier sauces and syrups to craft drinks that feel rich and intentional, without being overly sweet. Every cup is made with care, the kind you can actually taste.

There are a lot of coffee shops, carts, and roasters out there. Can you tell us what makes Beeso Coffee different?
What truly sets Beeso apart is our focus on customization. Every event, every cup, and every setup is tailored to fit the moment. From personalized drink menus and custom flavors to branded coffee bars and signature latte art, we craft each experience to be unique. Whether it’s a wedding, corporate event, or your daily latte, we take pride in crafting coffee that feels like it was made just for you with quality, consistency, and heart in every sip.

We always love to know what others are drinking. Can you tell us your most popular roast or drink and what makes it a fan favorite?
Our top picks are the Biscoff Latte, Spanish Latte, and Pistachio Latte. The Strawberry Matcha is a refreshing favorite, and this season, the Pumpkin Pie Latte is the star of the fall menu.

What’s something unique or surprising about the Beeso Coffee story that people might not know?
A lot of people don’t know that Beeso started as a mobile coffee catering business before we opened our café. We served hundreds of weddings, corporate events, and pop-ups across Texas, and that’s where we learned how to deliver great coffee quickly and with a personal touch. That experience still shapes everything we do today.

What do you hope people experience when they find you at Jingle Bash? 
We want people to feel the warmth, not just from the coffee, but from the whole experience. Whether they’re shopping, catching up with friends, or just stopping by for a caffeine boost, we hope Beeso feels like a cozy little pause in their day.

Artist Spotlight: Hearts and Sharts

Before we begin our interview with Dena Holley with Hearts and Sharts, I’d like to make mention that Dena is on our leadership team here at Dallas M.A.D.E. She’s the creative genius behind graphics, marketing materials, and even our brand new logo! Now that credit is given where it is due…on with the show!

How did your craft or business get its start?

My Mom died while I was engaged, so I took a leave of absence from work. I took that time to handle her estate stuff, but also to plan our wedding. After I DIY’d my entire wedding - and I mean almost the entire thing, I needed something to do with my time. I had been completely consumed with planning and taking care of Mom’s stuff that when we got back from the honeymoon, I was like, “What now?”. I knew I didn’t want to go back to work in property management. I knew I loved to sew and flip furniture - so I did that. That was the first iteration of Hearts and Sharts. Somewhere along the way, I got tired of painting and sanding furniture and rediscovered my love for drawing, which brings us to where we are today. 

What inspires your work the most right now?

All of the “what-the-fuckery” going on right now.

How do you hope people feel when they see or use your creations?

Seen.  Like they’re reading their own most secret inner thoughts - but on a card or a sticker.

What’s something people might not realize about what you do?

Being funny is actually harder than it looks. 

What’s been the most rewarding moment since starting your creative journey?

Being able to buy adult things. A sofa from Article. A full yard of new sod. Adult Money!

What can shoppers look forward to discovering at your booth this year?

New stuff that’ll make you laugh out loud in public — which is always my favorite. I’ll have my “You Park Like a Dick” sets, holiday cards, and a bunch of new designs that are inappropriate in the most cheerful way possible. Basically, if you want something cute with a little edge, I’ve got you covered.

Do you have any new pieces or surprises debuting at the market?

Holiday Teenie Weenies!

What do you love most about being part of this local market and creative community?

The Jingle Bash always feels like a reunion of makers - walking in to set up just feels comfortable. Everyone in this show is in the handmade community, so there’s an unspoken understanding that we’re all on the grind and all there to help each other out. The shoppers are amazing! I love seeing the same faces each year - many say that this show is a “don’t-miss” for their holiday shopping - and I agree. I try to shop before it opens. Shhh!

What’s the best piece of advice you’d share with a fellow maker or dreamer just starting out?

Stop waiting for it to feel safe. It never will. Make the thing, post the thing, sell the thing - even if it’s not perfect. Especially if it’s not perfect. Authentic beats polished every time. People love authenticity.

DIY Flower Crowns: A Fun Summer Craft for Parents & Kids

Looking for a simple and sweet way to spend a sunny afternoon? Flower crowns are the perfect summer craft — beautiful, easy to make, and a big hit with kids and grown-ups alike. Whether you're prepping for a garden party or just want a fun way to get crafty outdoors, this step-by-step guide will have you blooming with creativity!

What You'll Need:

• Faux flowers (or fresh flowers from the garden!)

• Floral wire

• Floral tape or green washi tape

• Wire cutters or scissors

• Ribbon (optional for extra flair)

Step 1: Build the Base

Cut a piece of floral wire long enough to wrap around your (or your child’s) head, plus a little extra to twist closed. Wrap it into a circle and twist the ends to secure.

Step 2: Prep Your Flowers

Trim the stems of your faux or real flowers, leaving about 2 inches of stem. Group small flowers together for fuller sections.

Step 3: Start Wrapping

Using floral tape, attach each flower stem to the wire base. Start at one side and work your way around, overlapping the flowers slightly to cover the tape and wire.

Jingle Bash: Make & Take Table by Untrash Creative Reuse

Besides running Untrash Creative Reuse, what else do you do with your time?

I’m a longtime writer; I currently work part-time in Communications for a local city government after freelancing for more than 20 years for the Dallas Morning News and other local publications such as Dallas Child and Dallas Family.

How did you get started:

When blogging became popular, I created a parenting blog called “Uncool Mom” and once my kids grew up, I dreamed about writing a blog about reuse and repurposing and calling it “Untrash”.  Around this same time (2015-16), I learned about creative reuse centers and dreamed about starting one of those, too. (Reusing/repurposing in all sorts of ways is my major interest/passion, whether it’s transforming cast-off materials into a work of art, giving new lives to abandoned animals, or turning leaves, coffee filters, and fruit rinds into compost!) 

After lots more dreaming, filing away ideas, and listening to that small, steady voice inside that kept on saying, “You need to do this!”, the Untrash blog finally became a reality in early 2021 and Untrash Creative Reuse opened in March 2023, at the time the only creative reuse center within 40 miles of Dallas. I was thrilled to get a spot inside the Cottonwood Market in Richardson, as its steady influx of customers and eclectic mix of not just antique dealers but also artists/crafters seemed like a great place for my shop—plus, their front desk staff takes care of checkout for all the Market’s many businesses, so I can keep my day job while my shop stays open without having to be responsible for staffing it.

What would you say was instrumental in helping you with your small business?

Crucial to helping me get started was the free mentoring provided by SCORE Dallas (a division of the Small Business Administration); the free resources provided online and in person are amazing! I kept my ideas for starting a creative reuse center mostly to myself all those years, and getting feedback and advice from bona fide business professionals was encouraging and invaluable. 

Could you please tell us what a creative reuse center is?

It’s a type of business, sometimes run as a nonprofit, that’s been around for decades but has increased in popularity and locations across the country over the past 20 years. Creative reuse centers generally share a purpose of helping the environment by keeping “pre-loved” materials with creative potential out of the landfill and selling them at a low cost and/or giving them to schools and nonprofit arts groups to be reused and upcycled, hopefully again and again. Materials are taken in on a donation basis; everything is usually weighed to let the community know how many pounds are being diverted from the landfill. 

Not many people have ever heard of reuse centers before, is there anything else we should know about them?

In addition to sorting, packaging, and offering the pre-loved craft supplies back to the public in some type of shop format, many creative reuse centers offer workshops and classes on ways to use the materials. 

The actual “centers” range from online shops and pop-ups at outdoor flea markets to giant, stand-alone “brick-and-mortars”. The Dallas area now has two creative reuse centers—my Untrash Creative Reuse is in Richardson on the North Dallas border near Coit and Beltline; Pegasus Creative Reuse can be found at Tyler Station in Oak Cliff. Not too far from Dallas is The Welman Project in Fort Worth, at which any teacher from a public or nonprofit private school can shop for FREE, and there’s Thistle Creative Reuse in Denton!

What types of materials do you offer at Untrash Creative Reuse?

I offer a lot of the same categories of materials that other creative reuse centers offer such as fabric, yarn, thread, patterns, and other supplies for sewing, knitting, embroidery, cross stitching, needlepoint, weaving, macrame, etc.

There are also: crayons and colored pencils; beads, cording, metal findings, and other jewelry-making supplies, various paper, paints, multi-media art; floral arranging/and some office and school supplies. There are also vintage items such as buttons, sewing baskets, photos, postcards, picture frames, and more! Yet another reason why my business feels at home at an antique mall! I also offer items made by artists who use repurposed materials in their creations—such as bowls made from LP records, earrings fashioned from Barbie shoes, and coasters created from board games—and I’m always on the lookout for new items to feature! 

What are your future dreams/goals for Untrash Creative?

I want to expand my current space. The support from the general community and the creative reuse community has been so positive from day one, and my storage unit is bursting with great items waiting to “come out and play” 😊!

Do you see any other forms of creative outlets that we could benefit from?

I want to plan more workshops and crafting circles. Untrash-sponsored events are held in a variety of places in the area and are driven by whatever items I’ve received in large quantities. I’d love to come up with ways to use them all!

Meet Jody Truly of Truly Pottery! I got to sit down with Jody and talk to her about her beautiful pottery. She is a kindred soul who loves creating art while appreciating the importance and beauty of the community it brings.

What got you started in making the pottery you make?

I got started 7 years ago. I actually took pottery in college, but it wasn’t right for me at the time and I didn’t really like it too much.  It wasn’t until later when I took a class with my daughter that I knew it was for me and now I can’t see not doing it.

I’m self-taught and realized that learning about pottery is a lot of trial and error, especially lots of error.

How did you start selling your pottery?

I started selling to friends at first. It has been slow growth but I’m a busy mom of 2 and this works for now. Maybe there will be more growth later but I’m not sure yet.

What are your favorite pieces to make?

Vases, candles, bowls, mugs, and trays

This makes me wonder if readers know the different pieces you make. Pottery isn’t just making vases. Can you tell me some other items you’ll have at the Jingle Bash?

Candles, Mixing bowls, Coffee mugs, Ornaments, etc.!

What’s something you think readers don’t know about making pottery?

You can make pottery without having a potter's wheel. I make a tray that doesn’t need to be spun on the wheel.

There are also books on slab building, hand building, coil rolling, etc. Some pieces can even be dried in the oven.

**A word of advice from Jody was to check for classes in your area!

I noticed some of your designs are etched, is that a special process?

This is one of my favorite things to do. Carving on clay and making designs. The clay even has a leather texture that’s just right for it.

This is your first year at the Jingle Bash. What are you looking forward to most?

Talking to people in my booth and seeing what they buy from me and where it is going. It’s about connecting and sharing stories with people. I’m looking forward to being there!

Jody is passionate about her art, and it shows.  We talked about future possibilities and the shared love of how art can bring people together through connection. I’m excited to see her at the Jingle Bash and even have my eye on a beautiful coffee mug I’ll be in line to buy😉

With the 15th annual Jingle Bash and the 22nd annual Cedars Open Studios happening on the same day, this vibrant neighborhood will be buzzing with opportunities to support local artists, artisans, and small businesses. Whether you’re on the hunt for unique holiday gifts, exploring local art studios, or simply looking to enjoy the creative energy of The Cedars, you won’t want to be anywhere else in the city.

Cedars Open Studio Tour

The Cedars neighborhood transforms into an open studio art tour, where visitors can explore exhibits, live music and performances showcasing the work of over 100 Cedars Artists in studios, galleries, businesses, and public spaces across the neighborhood. Studio tours are followed by a closing reception at 6pm.

The day-long event is FREE and open to the public in the historic Cedars neighborhood just south of downtown Dallas, TX. There will be free transportation around the neighborhood, and you can join Bike Friendly Cedars for a pedal-powered tour in the morning.

This event is presented by the Cedars Open Studios nonprofit organization and the generous sponsorships of local creatives, businesses, and organizations.

Etsy Dallas Jingle Bash

The Etsy Dallas Jingle Bash is a curated 100% handmade artisan shopping event featuring unique, handmade goods. Shop from over 80 artists offering original art, home goods, and artisanal soaps, to local jewelry designers, leather workers, and so much more.

This event is presented by the Dallas Craft Collective a 501(c)(6) non-profit association of creative entrepreneurs. Founded in 2007, our focus it two-fold - to help support and spread the word about the amazing handmade makers in the DFW area and to share and teach the community about the handmade movement.

Both events are free and are perfect timing for a festive weekend, November 23rd!

Artist Spotlight: A Brittain Studio

Meet Amber Brittain of A Brittain Studio. Amber takes sewing to a new creative level with the assortment of bags she makes and the array of items she sews herself. Her love of sewing came full circle in 2020. While she picked up the hobby as a therapeutic outlet, it launched her into eventually leaving her full-time job, and we are all the more lucky to welcome her!

We are based in Wylie, TX, and though we do not have a storefront, we offer online services. You can also ship with us in person at various markets. 

What do you make/create?

We make handmade bags and eco-friendly products. 

What do you feel sets you apart and makes your pieces special?

I feel like our products are a great mix of practicality and style. We do our best to create products that are not only cute but very practical. We want our products to help make your life a little easier and a little cuter.  

What led you to start sewing?

My mom and grandmother taught me to sew at a young age and it’s just something I’ve stuck with. 

I’m sure you’ve overcome some hurdles with your business. So far, what would you say has been your biggest success?

Hmmm…I’m not sure. Honestly, the fact that I’m in my third year as a small business owner feels like a success in its own right. Being a business owner is not for the faint of heart for sure. 

As far as products go, our paperless towels have been the stand-out star. When we first started them, we began by creating just a few packs for ourselves and figured we would try them at the studio, but man they blew up larger than we could have imagined!

We’ve also designed a few bags from scratch. Our diaper clutch crossbodies took a lot of trial and error, but I was able to finally design a bag that did everything we wanted. These bags are unique to just us. We have a few more A. Brittain exclusives that have been designed and hopefully will launch in 2025, but being as it’s only me sewing, we will have to see. 

What about challenges? What’s been your biggest challenge thus far?

In being a small business and a handmade one at that, so much of running the business is based on me. Finding that balance of trying to do it all, and still enjoying what I do so I don’t burn out. 

What is your favorite product that you create, and why is it your favorite?

I know it’s probably cliche, but I love everything I create. Some are easier to make than others, but I love having a variety of things to make. If I get bored or too frustrated with a certain product, I can take time away and work on something else. 

What can we look forward to seeing at your booth this year?

This year you can see a lot of your usual favorites, like our paperless towels and small bags, but this year we have focused on offering some of our bigger style bags at shows, so make sure you check out our corduroy backpacks!

What do you love most about running your business?

It’s a great excuse to go fabric shopping.  I love lots of little things about running my business like being my boss, setting my hours, and meeting all sorts of new people at shows. 

As far as Jingle Bash goes, what is the best gift we need to buy from your booth? 

Our paperless towels are our number one seller at Christmas. They are a perfect size and price point for most people. They make great stocking stuffers, and they come in a ton of prints so you can get each person on your list a gift as unique as them.

Artist Spotlight: Mesa Blue Jewelry

Meet Linsey of Mesa Blue Jewelry! Linsey established Mesa Blue in 2009 while attending Texas State University. Growing up in El Paso she would shop at thrift stores with her mom to buy unique vintage jewelry, which she would deconstruct and redesign. She inherited her passion for stones and minerals from her dad, The Rock Hunter. Today she uses her love of natural materials and timeless designs to create each piece in her Dallas area studio.

What led you to start your business? How did you get started, and how has the journey been so far? 

I've been making jewelry since I was a kid. I founded Mesa Blue in 2009, and our jewelry is now in boutiques all over the world. 

What’s your favorite jewelry to make?

I love working with stones. My favorite thing to make is anything one-of-a-kind with beautiful stones. 

What’s been your biggest success?

My proudest moments are when my 10-year-old daughter and her friends get excited wearing new designs.

Stick to your style. Don't chase trends—design pieces you would wear.
